Jeju in Three Days: East, South, and the Mountain

Itinerary

  1. Seongsan Ilchulbong
  2. Udo Island
  3. Seopjikoji
  4. Jeongbang Waterfall
  5. Cheonjiyeon Waterfall
  6. Jusangjeolli Cliff
  7. Hallasan (Eorimok)
  8. Dongmun Market

Three days is the minimum for Jeju's essential triangle: the volcanic east, the waterfall south, and the mountain in the middle. Rent a car — this itinerary assumes one.

Day One: The East

Start before dawn at Seongsan Ilchulbong for the sunrise climb — 25 minutes up to the crater rim. Breakfast on abalone porridge at the harbor, then walk to Seongsan Port for the Udo ferry. Spend the late morning cycling the island loop (three hours with stops, peanut ice cream mandatory). Back on the mainland, drive ten minutes to Seopjikoji — the coastal headland with the lighthouse and the cliff walk — for the afternoon. Sleep in Seongsan or drive back toward Jeju City.

Day Two: The South Coast

Drive south to Seogwipo (about an hour across the island). Start at Jeongbang Waterfall — the only waterfall in Asia that drops directly into the sea, 23 m off the cliff into the surf. Then Cheonjiyeon, ten minutes away, a calmer fall in a forested gorge. After lunch in Seogwipo (the Maeil Olle Market for hallabong juice and black pork skewers), drive west to Jusangjeolli Cliff — the hexagonal basalt columns at the coast, Jeju's Giant's Causeway — and if time allows, the nearby Cheonjeyeon falls (different from Cheonjiyeon, confusingly) or the Yakcheonsa temple. Sleep in Seogwipo or the Jungmun resort area.

Day Three: Hallasan and Departure

If you are fit and reserved ahead, the Eorimok trail takes you to the Witse Oreum plateau at 1,700 m — 6.8 km each way, the best non-summit hike, no reservation needed for this route. If not, the shorter Hallasan Ecological Forest or the 1100 Altitude Wetland boardwalk give you the mountain in an hour. Either way, end at Dongmun Market in Jeju City before your flight — the evening food stalls (black pork, hallabong everything, omegi-tteok rice cakes) are the right last meal.

Logistics

Distances are short but buses are slow — the car earns its cost all three days. Book the Ilchulbong sunrise for your clearest forecast morning and swap days if needed.
